Sometimes the stars align and you have that one standout day filled with great sightings and adventure. Our new group of volunteers had just that happen to them during their first week at Askari. We awoke at 2h30am and departed on an early morning night drive, bumping into lions, spotted hyena, a vulture, several owls and a few chameleons. We then enjoyed a remarkable sunrise coffee break and the sightings just kept coming, with numerous antelope and giraffe before lunch. Later in the day we hiked up to one of our favourite viewpoints over the reserve where we discussed what defines a wilderness area and then watched a great sunset. On the way home we then came across a male leopard marking his territory and not one, but two brown hyenas. We then finished off the day in the Selati River taking in the beautiful stars. It is days like these that keep you coming back for more- Africa is a special place!

CAUGHT IN THE ACT

Our trail cameras picked up on some very special brown hyena behaviour recently. This individual was busy anal pasting. This is a process whereby the hyena scent marks a piece of vegetation by leaving secretions from its large anal gland (you can see it in the video for a brief second), which is located below the base of its tail. Unlike spotted hyenas, brown hyenas leave two components to this scent marking. The first is a white paste, which has a long lasting odour. They use this to communicate with other brown hyena clans in the area that this is their territory, so stay away in order to avoid conflict. The second is a darker almost black paste which has a short term odour. This is used to communicate with the hyena’s own clan members, to indicate when last they moved through the area looking for food.
As brown hyenas are predominantly solitary scavengers, they need to let the other members of their clan know that they have already checked the area for food and would have consumed whatever sources were available.

Today is International Hyaena day, a day to highlight these, often misunderstood, species. There are 4 species in the hyaenidae family, 2 of which (the brown and striped) are classified as 'Near threatened' on the IUCN Red list.

The Askari team assisted our reserve management team with some game capture this week. We helped move 5 buffalo, 2 nyala and 1 sable. These animals form part of our breeding initiative, which helps keep our overall reserve animal numbers in good health. All individuals were safely darted and immobilised by a vet and then released after a reversal drug was administered.

Another great encounter with our resident dwarf mongoose pack.

Dwarf mongooses are the smallest carnivore in Africa. They live in highly social groups, with one alpha pair usually monopolising the breeding. The offspring of this pair are cooperatively reared by the whole group. All individuals in the group also collectively engage in territory defence, sentinel duty (looking out for predators), babysitting and grooming. Dwarf mongoose are also very vocal, using various whistles and twitters to maintain contact between individuals, especially when danger is near. If you listen carefully in the video you can hear the contact calls.

Our volunteer's recently tried one of our local South African delicacies- mopane worms.

Mopane worms are in fact the larval stage (caterpillars) of the mopane emperor moth. They are usually hand picked in the wild in late spring and summer. Once picked their guts are removed and they are then boiled with salt and later dried, allowing them to keep for many months. Mopane worms are nutritionally rich in protein (>50%) and contain significant amounts of phosphorus, iron and calcium. For this reason mopane worms form an integral part of the diet of many people living in southern Africa.

A recent visitor to @askariwcp. This baboon spider found its way into the volunteer house recently. We carefully caught it and released it back into the bush. Baboon spiders are large primitive spiders that are closely related to tarantulas. They are ferocious feeders and eat insects, small rodents, small reptiles and almost anything they can overpower. Although they can deliver a painful bite with their large fangs, they are generally harmless to humans.

We recently encountered a real battle going on between a large millipede and a millipede assassin bug. As the name suggests, the millipede assassin bug specialises in hunting and eating millipedes. They have a very powerful recurved beak called a rostrum, which they use to inject a secretion into the unsuspecting victim. The secretion has a very quick paralytic action and the assassin bug then sucks it's prey dry! Fortunately for this millipede, after several attempts the assassin bug eventually gave up its pursuit and moved off. Nature is all around us and sometimes we have to just take the time to notice the smaller things.

The team were very lucky to get to partake in not one, but two veterinarian interventions recently. Both buffalo's were found to have nasty injuries to their rumps, probably caused by the horn of another individual. Our local vet was called in and the animals were darted and immobilised. Once under anaesthetic their wounds were quickly treated and stitched up. We had a great encounter with one of our elephant herds this morning. One of the younger bulls also decided to take advantage of the road and have a dust bath. Dust baths are a useful tool used by elephants to protect themselves from the sun and insects.

Fun fact: did you know that unlike most other herbivores, oxpeckers do not regularly land on elephants. This is because elephant skin does not support many ecto-parasites and elephants likely don't tolerate oxpeckers, using their tail, trunk or ears to chase them away.

After the big rains in February this year there were a number of areas that were badly affected by erosion. The team spent the morning building cages and filling them with rocks (also known as gabion walls) in one of the new deep gully's. This is done in an attempt to stop any further erosion on this hillside. If successful the natural vegetation should regrow and slowly stabilise this hillside once again

Did you know, although leopard tortoises eat mostly plant matter, they also eat old carnivore scat/faeces (coprophagia) and even gnaw on bones they come across in the wild (osteophagia). This is because the high calcium content in both are essential to keep the tortoise’s shell in good condition. Females also specifically require calcium when producing eggs for reproduction.

We recently came across this relaxed young leopard tortoise eating some old hair from a civet scat. South Africa has the largest diversity of tortoises in the world- with 14 recognised species!

**MEGA SIGHTING ALERT**

We welcomed a new group of volunteers to Askari on Monday and they seem to have brought all the luck with them. Our first drive started off with a great sighting of the entire Askari pride of lions. This continued with excellent sightings of buffalo, giraffe and many other general game species over the next few days. However, the highlight of this week (so far!) must go to this beautiful ground pangolin we saw last night. It was a quick sighting but one we will remember for a long time!

The ground pangolin, also known as the Temminck's pangolin, is one of four species found in Africa. They are solitary animals and are mostly active at night, making them exceptionally difficult to see in the wild. Pangolins strictly only feed on ants and termites, which they access by digging with their long curved claws. They are currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN and their population is in decline due to exploitation for traditional medicine and bushmeat throughout their known range.
